Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Director, Compensation is a dynamic leader who will bring fresh ideas to evolve our compensation programs, balancing business needs with the employee experience. This individual will use their knowledge of modern compensation practices, equity plans, and the compliance and regulatory landscape to drive our pay-for-performance compensation philosophy. The role requires an individual who can fly high (set strategy) and dive deep (roll up their sleeves to get work done). In this role, you have the unique opportunity to build on a strong foundation to inspire employee performance, support our people-first culture, and reward employees for their valued contributions to the organization. You will lead a team responsible for managing all aspects of Zovio’s compensation programs, reporting to the Senior Vice President, People & Culture.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the SVP, People & Culture to develop and direct Zovio’s compensation programs anchored in our pay-for-performance philosophy

  • Deliver innovative approaches grounded in data to iterate our current compensation programs to attract, engage, and retain top talent while balancing our bottom line

  • Design, manage and administer a compensation program that supports Zovio’s business needs, including base pay, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, and stock-based compensation

  • Partner with business groups to address specific incentive compensation needs, including colleagues in finance, university partners, and employer partnerships

  • Evaluate competitive practices and positioning relative to the market and make recommendations to ensure our compensation programs align with Zovio’s People strategy

  • Lead the annual compensation cycle, including base salary, merit, bonus, and equity reviews

  • Collaborate with members of the People team to drive pay-for-performance, develop compensation planning guides, create manager training and employee communications

  • Collaborate closely with the SVP, People & Culture on executive compensation management, processes, disclosures, and reporting

  • Prepare “presentation-ready” materials for the Compensation Committee

  • Manage all sources of market information, including compensation survey data, geographic differentials, and trends in stock plan management

  • Guide complex and unusual compensation situations with a data-driven approach

  • Establish a set of metrics to evaluate the overall effectiveness of our compensation programs

  • Refresh salary range structures and pay markets at appropriate intervals

  • Provide leadership, set priorities, and provide guidance and feedback to the compensation team to foster career growth

  • Ensure Zovio’s compensation programs are compliant with all relevant regulations, including but not limited to CA pay equity and FLSA

  • Partner with the People Team on job offers, onboarding and offboarding processes, compensation solutions, job profiles, promotions, performance reviews, immigration visa and Green Card processing, recognition, and reward strategies

Preferred Experience:

  • 8-10 years designing, implementing, and leading compensation, sales compensation, executive compensation, and stock-based compensation in a publicly-traded company

  • Strong presentation skills, especially related to obtaining decisions from executive leadership and the Compensation Committee

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth, dynamic business environment; tech and startup industry experience highly desired

  • Out of the box thinking and ability to bring bold ideas to life

  • Ability to multi-task, leading and executing multiple projects concurrently

  • Strong sense of ownership with an unwavering commitment to the employee experience

  • Solid ability to work cross-functionally and navigate all levels of the organization

  • Strong command of equity programs and emerging trends in stock-based compensation

  • Deep analytical skills with the ability to utilize data to influence decision making

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong communicator, both verbally and written

  • Knowledge of US and state-level regulatory pay requirements

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Solid understanding of proxy advisors and the role they play in evaluating executive compensation

  • Strong presentation skills, especially related to obtaining decisions from executive leadership and the Compensation Committee


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required; Master’s Degree in a relevant field preferred

  • CCP certification a plus
