Zovio Systems Engineer II in United States

The System Engineer II is responsible for the company’s internal and customer-facing infrastructure and works closely with Software Development and Information Technology to provision, configure, maintain and monitor systems within said infrastructure. The System Engineer II is responsible for establishing and maintaining application infrastructure within a large scale .NET/Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019, SQL Server 2008/2012 using tools such as PowerShell, VMware 6.5 and above, SCOM, SCCM, and Splunk. The System Engineer II is responsible for the design, architecture, implementation, and Tier III support of systems solutions to meet the growing needs of the business. The System Engineer II is also responsible for assisting in making recommendations for the selection of platform configurations, hardware, operating systems, software, and assisting in the planning, provisioning, installation, documentation, and administration of all server operating systems and storage subsystems.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of IT Operations the System Engineer II is a full-time remote position.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Operate and maintain high availability systems in remote datacenters

  • Proactively scale and improve infrastructure to meet rapid growth

  • Work closely with IT and development teams on system provisioning and configuration

  • Work closely with IT development teams to ensure site reliability and performance

  • Work closely with development teams to deliver ongoing releases and updates

  • Work across functional (development/testing, deployment, systems/infrastructure) and project teams to ensure continuous operation of build and test systems.

  • Drive visibility and continuous improvement of delivery pipeline

  • Maintain distinct development, QA, staging, production and PLT environments

  • Works with Application developers, Architects to understand application middleware requirements and create middleware configurations to meet these needs.

  • Experience with middleware engineering focused on designing and operating scalable and highly available solutions

  • Performs deployments of custom and Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) code/software

  • Maintain monitoring and reporting infrastructure / platform

  • Assist IT and development teams in troubleshooting system issues

  • Ensure release and update process remains agile and efficient

  • Document existing and future systems and procedures

  • Serves as an escalation point in an on-call support rotation and may work nights and weekend.

  • Create and maintain physical and logical documentation

  • Create and present project handoff technical documentation

  • Create and maintain Windows and Linux based OS as a baseline used in automated server standups

  • Serves as subject matter expert and mentor for System Administrator/Engineer I and II staff

  • Act as a technical advisor to other personnel in the Software Development and Information Technology departments

  • Act as an advisor for other department personnel in accomplishing project goals

  • Actively works with multiple teams to build/transition systems and applications from on-premises to the Azure cloud

  • Act as representative for IT Operations in project meetings with stakeholders and multiple other IT teams providing subject matter expertise necessary to move the project forward efficiently

Minimum Requirements :

  • Minimum of 4 years in an IS or IT role

  • Minimum of 4 years working in a medium to large web development and hosting

  • Strong familiarity Microsoft Operating Systems

  • Experience with Azure Cloud Services and O365 systems

  • Proficient with structure and management of Active Directory ServicesExperience with production change control and release processes

  • Experience with backup software and hardware a plus

  • Expert understanding of server maintenance and health

  • Strong understanding of networking engineering concepts

  • Stong understanding of application architecture and troubleshooting for both on-premises and cloud based systems

  • Excellent time and priority management abilities

  • Very strong problem solving/analytics abilities

  • Excellent communication skills; verbal, written and listening, across several disciplines

and organizational levels

  • Sound technical to business understanding

  • Ability to work independently and guide others

  • Willingness to drive long running issues to resolution or propose short term solutions

  • Familiarity with SDLC and/or other systems development methodologies.

  • Automate wherever feasible to providing repeatability and consistency.

  • Strong Powershell skills preferred with experience automating tasks in Azure
